Several years ago, I began to make work about shelter animals. Initially, I thought I was going to create portraits of animals that had lost their lives in animal shelters as a way to bring attention to the issue. However, in the years since, I have discovered that making portraits of animals would do absolutely nothing to discuss the issue - the issue is really 'us' and our behavior/laws/perceptions. What I have found is a myriad of layers of those working hard to save the animals versus those working hard to make a profit. The world of animal advocacy is large and complex... and can be very cruel and misleading at times ..as those who so desperately push for profit driven business (using animals) have found ways to use and manipulate some of the very people who claim to be fighting to help the animals.
